Arrival checklist · Columbia

Settling in near Columbia — Morningside, Manhattanville & the medical center

A practical, step-by-step checklist for your first weeks. Not legal, immigration, or tax advice — confirm details with your host institution.

Before you arrive

  • Confirm your start date and badging/ID process with your host (Columbia University (Morningside Heights)).
  • Line up short-term housing for your first few weeks so you don't commit to a lease sight-unseen.
  • Arrange a US-usable phone (a prepaid SIM or eSIM works on day one).
  • Shortlist neighborhoods near Columbia: Morningside Heights, Manhattan Valley, West Harlem, Hamilton Heights.

Your first week

  • Pick up your institutional ID/badge and email — your email domain may unlock community access here.
  • Open a bank account and sort out subway fare — check the MTA's own fares page for the current payment options and any weekly cap before you buy anything.
  • Walk or ride your commute once before you rely on it.

Getting around

  • The 1 is the line that ties Columbia together — 116th Street for Morningside, 125th Street for Manhattanville, and 168th Street for the medical center, all on one route that runs around the clock. Morningside Heights is a one-line neighbourhood: the station is literally 116th Street–Columbia University and only the 1 serves it, with the B and C several blocks east across Morningside Park. The medical center is the opposite — the 168th Street station sits effectively inside the campus with the A, C and 1, and the A gives a one-seat overnight ride down to Greenwich Village. Watch out for the four separate, unconnected 125th Street stations in Harlem; only the Broadway one is at the Manhattanville gateway.
  • A used commuter bike from the marketplace pays for itself quickly if you're near a trail or bus line.

Settling in

  • Furnish cheaply from moving sales and the marketplace — researchers leave every season.
  • Join a newcomer happy hour or meetup in your first month.
  • Read the safety guide before paying for any housing or marketplace item.
