Washington, DC

Washington DC metro research community

Research / scholarly · Washington, DC metropolitan area

Researcher housing guidance organised around where you actually work and how you will commute across Washington, Maryland and Northern Virginia. This is the page for choosing: which campus you are assigned to, which jurisdiction you want to be a tenant in, and whether you can live without a car. The starting fact most arrivals learn late is that the institutions bringing you here mostly do not house you — NIH states in terms that it does not provide housing for fellows, and the NIH-adjacent option it points to is limited to badge-holding stipend fellows; NIST's guest-researcher pages carry no housing guidance at all. If you already know your campus, go straight to its own hub — NIH Bethesda and NIST Gaithersburg each have one. Independent community resource — not affiliated with or endorsed by any agency, hospital or university.

Washington, DC

Irving Street hospitals & Brookland

Medical center · Washington, DC

Housing for clinical and biomedical researchers in north-central Washington: MedStar Washington Hospital Center and Children's National Hospital, which sit next to each other on the Irving Street and Michigan Avenue superblock, with Catholic University a short way east in Brookland. The fact that decides most searches here is that Children's National operates in two places about three miles apart — the hospital on Michigan Avenue and the Research & Innovation Campus at the top of Georgia Avenue on the former Walter Reed site — so "near Children's National" is not a usable instruction. The second is that neither hospital is walkable from a Metro station. Independent community resource — not affiliated with or endorsed by Children's National, MedStar Health, or the Catholic University of America.

Brookland · Edgewood · Michigan Park · Petworth

Maryland

NIST Gaithersburg

Federal agency / lab · Gaithersburg, MD

Housing and community for guest researchers, associates, NRC postdocs, and visiting scientists assigned to the NIST Gaithersburg campus. The practical starting point: NIST's Foreign Guest Researcher Program page and its campus-access page carry no housing or lodging guidance at all, and that programme page states that most of your funding will need to come from a sponsoring company or institution — so an incoming guest researcher is arranging housing alone, often on someone else's budget. The campus does run a shuttle from Shady Grove Metro, which widens where you can realistically live. Independent community resource — not affiliated with or endorsed by NIST or the Department of Commerce.

Gaithersburg · Rockville · King Farm · Shady Grove

MarylandLaunch hub

NIH Bethesda

Federal agency / lab · Bethesda, MD

Housing, moving sales, and community for visiting fellows, postbacs, postdocs and visiting scientists around the NIH Bethesda campus. Start here with the fact that decides most plans: NIH's own training office states, in those words, that NIH does not provide housing for fellows — and FAES, the NIH-adjacent option that page points to, publishes eligibility limited to people enrolled in an NIH stipend-paid fellowship or scholarship programme who hold an NIH badge, with federal employees, contractors and special volunteers stated to be ineligible, and a waitlist besides. If that is not you, the Bethesda private market is the answer, and this hub is about making that survivable. Independent community resource — not affiliated with or endorsed by NIH, HHS, or FAES.

Bethesda · Rockville · North Bethesda · Silver Spring

Maryland

Montgomery County Federal Science Corridor

Federal agency / lab · Montgomery County, MD

The Montgomery County science corridor for visitors who move between campuses rather than living beside one: FDA White Oak and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research at Forest Glen, plus the Red Line and I-270 links to NIH Bethesda and NIST Gaithersburg. If you are assigned to one specific campus, start with that campus's own hub — this page is for choosing between them and for the commutes that cross them.

Bethesda · Rockville · Gaithersburg · Silver Spring

Maryland

University of Maryland / College Park

University · College Park, MD

Housing, moving sales, and community for visiting researchers, postdocs, visiting scholars, and interns around the University of Maryland, College Park and the US-1 corridor in Prince George's County. Independent community resource — not affiliated with or endorsed by the University of Maryland.

College Park · Hyattsville · Riverdale Park · University Park

Maryland

NASA Goddard / Greenbelt

Federal agency / lab · Greenbelt, MD

Housing, moving sales, and community for NASA Postdoctoral Program fellows, interns, cooperative researchers, and contractors around the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt. Independent community resource — not affiliated with or endorsed by NASA.

Greenbelt · Lanham · College Park · Berwyn Heights

USDA Beltsville / ARS

Federal agency / lab · Beltsville, MD

Housing, moving sales, and community for ARS postdocs, ORISE fellows, research associates, and visiting scientists around the USDA Beltsville Agricultural Research Center. Independent community resource — not affiliated with or endorsed by the USDA.

Beltsville · Greenbelt · College Park · Laurel

Maryland

Silver Spring / Forest Glen

Federal agency / lab · Silver Spring, MD

Furnished rooms, basement apartments, short-term rentals, sublets, and shared housing in Silver Spring and Forest Glen, Maryland — for people working at the NOAA Silver Spring campus, the FDA White Oak campus, and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) at the Forest Glen Annex, plus Red Line commuters to NIH/Bethesda and DC research and government offices. It's early days for this area, so listings may be sparse at first. Independent community resource — not affiliated with or endorsed by NOAA, the FDA, WRAIR, NIH, HHS, the Department of Defense, or any government or university institution.

Silver Spring · Forest Glen · Downtown Silver Spring · Woodside

Maryland

Rockville & Shady Grove life sciences

Research / scholarly · Rockville, MD

Housing for researchers assigned to the Rockville life-sciences cluster — the National Cancer Institute's Shady Grove campus, the Universities at Shady Grove, and the J. Craig Venter Institute's Maryland site. People sent here routinely start their search in Bethesda and end up with a commute nobody warned them about: these campuses are not walkable from NIH Bethesda or from NIST, and NCI runs its own shuttle between Shady Grove and the NIH main campus precisely because they are separate places. This hub covers the Rockville market on its own terms, and names honestly which shuttles you can actually use. Independent community resource — not affiliated with or endorsed by NCI, NIH, the University System of Maryland, or JCVI.

Rockville · King Farm · Traville · Fallsgrove

Virginia

Virginia

Blackstone / Fort Pickett

Federal agency / lab · Blackstone, VA

Furnished rooms, short-term rentals, and small-town housing in and around Blackstone, Virginia — for people training or working at Fort Pickett (called Fort Barfoot 2023–2025) and the State Department's FASTC, and visitors to Virginia Tech's Southern Piedmont Agricultural Research and Extension Center. Independent community resource — not affiliated with or endorsed by Fort Pickett, the U.S. Department of State, Virginia Tech, or any government or university institution.

Blackstone · Fort Pickett / Fort Barfoot · Crewe · Burkeville

Virginia

Alexandria & National Landing

Research / scholarly · Alexandria, VA

Housing for researchers at the Northern Virginia end of the region: the National Science Foundation in Alexandria's Carlyle area, and Virginia Tech's Innovation Campus in Potomac Yard. Both bring people in on fixed-term appointments — NSF rotators and IPAs, Virginia Tech graduate researchers — and neither publishes a housing programme for them, which makes this the part of the region where an independent resource matters most. The corridor spans the Alexandria and Arlington line deliberately, because National Landing is Crystal City, Pentagon City and Potomac Yard together. Independent community resource — not affiliated with or endorsed by the National Science Foundation or Virginia Tech.

New York City

New York City

New York City research community

Research / scholarly · New York, NY

One place to understand every realistic housing path near New York City's research institutions — for visiting scholars, postdocs, fellows, graduate students, clinical trainees, and interns arriving at NYU, Columbia, Rockefeller, Weill Cornell, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Mount Sinai, Cornell Tech, CUNY, and the city's other labs. Most institution-run housing is closed to "visiting" titles and the private market screens on income and U.S. credit, so the useful question is not "where do I search" but "which paths am I actually eligible for, on my dates". Community listings here are brand new, so this hub leads with the paths that already exist. Independent community resource — not affiliated with or endorsed by any university, hospital, or agency.

New York City

NYU Washington Square & Kips Bay medical corridor

University · Manhattan, NY

Housing for visiting researchers, postdocs, master's and PhD students, clinical trainees and summer interns around two NYU locations that are constantly confused: the Washington Square campus in Greenwich Village, and NYU Langone Health on First Avenue in Kips Bay, alongside Bellevue and the Manhattan VA. They are a couple of miles and one very different commute apart. Community listings here are new, so this page leads with the housing paths that already exist — including the NYU summer programs that are genuinely open to people with no NYU affiliation. Independent community resource — not affiliated with or endorsed by NYU or NYU Langone Health.

Greenwich Village · East Village · Kips Bay · Murray Hill

New York City

Upper East Side biomedical corridor

Medical center · Manhattan, NY

Housing for postdocs, visiting scientists, research fellows and clinical trainees in the densest biomedical cluster in New York: The Rockefeller University, Memorial Sloan Kettering and Weill Cornell Medicine sit within a few blocks of each other on York Avenue, with Mount Sinai about thirty blocks north. Every institution here allocates housing against a document it issues — an appointment letter, an offer of employment, a sponsoring department — so eligibility, not searching, is the thing to sort out first. Community listings here are new, so this page leads with what those institutions actually publish. Independent community resource — not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them.

Upper East Side · Yorkville · Lenox Hill · Carnegie Hill

New York City

Columbia — Morningside, Manhattanville & the medical center

University · Manhattan, NY

Housing for visiting scholars, postdocs, research officers, and graduate students across Columbia's three campuses — Morningside Heights at 116th Street, Manhattanville north of 125th Street, and the Irving Medical Center fifty blocks further north at 168th Street in Washington Heights. They run different housing systems with different deadlines, and Columbia states plainly that visiting titles are not eligible for university housing, which changes the whole plan for a visiting scholar. Community listings here are new, so this page leads with the routes that already exist, including the affiliate sublet board and the residence next door that does admit visiting scholars. Independent community resource — not affiliated with or endorsed by Columbia University.

How hubs grow

New hubs are added where the community already is

We add a hub when there’s a real reason to — an official visiting-researcher program, a local promoter or tester, search demand, useful official resources, or existing listings. That keeps each hub a genuine, shareable launch page instead of an empty placeholder. Know a campus that should be here, or want to help launch one? Tell us.
