Your first week

Getting around
- Metro is the spine, but it does not reach everything: NIH Bethesda sits on a station, while NIST, NASA Goddard, USDA Beltsville, FDA White Oak and the Naval Research Laboratory all need a bus, an institutional shuttle or a car for the last mile. Institutional shuttles are not public transit — NCI's require an NIH badge or a sponsor-issued pass, and NIST frames its shuttle as being for official visitors and staff — so plan the commute you can rely on before your paperwork exists. MARC and VRE commuter rail are largely weekday services. Local buses are a patchwork of county systems with differing fares, and they are usually what makes a specific address work. Crossing the Potomac is the expensive decision: if your campus is in Virginia, look in Virginia.
