Avoiding rental scams

The red flags that catch newcomers, and how to verify a listing before you pay.

Safety · For Everyone — especially first-time U.S. renters · Updated Jun 1, 2026 · Last reviewed Jun 1, 2026

Newcomers are targeted by rental scams precisely because they are under time pressure and unfamiliar with the area. A few habits keep you safe.

Red flags

  • A price that is well below the market.
  • A "landlord" who is conveniently out of the country and can't show the place.
  • Pressure to pay a deposit immediately to "hold" it.
  • Requests to pay by wire transfer, gift card, crypto, or payment app.
  • Refusal to do an in-person or video tour.

Verify before you pay

  • Tour in person or by live video — not a pre-recorded clip.
  • Confirm the person controls the property (ask to see it, meet on site).
  • Keep payments traceable and within normal channels.
