Opening a bank account and phone plan basics

The two setup tasks that unlock everything else — what to bring and what to expect.

A bank account and a phone number unlock almost everything else — leases, deliveries, and verification.

Bank account

  • Most banks need your passport, a second ID, a U.S. address, and sometimes proof of your appointment.
  • Ask about accounts designed for international students/visitors with no SSN.
  • A local branch you can walk into is handy in the first weeks.

Phone plan

  • Prepaid plans need no credit check and are easy to start on day one.
  • An eSIM can get you a number before you even land.

Tips

  • Some services want a U.S. phone number to verify you — set this up early.
  • This is general guidance only; confirm requirements directly with the bank or carrier.
