NYU visiting researcher housing: Washington Square, Kips Bay and what you can apply for

Before anything else: work out which NYU you are going to. "NYU" means a campus in Greenwich Village and a hospital campus two miles north-east on First Avenue, and they are different in every way that matters for housing — different neighbourhoods, different housing offices, and one of them has no subway.

What is closed, so you can stop looking

Faculty housing. NYU's policy states that full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty are eligible, and that visiting faculty, adjunct faculty and other non-full-time faculty or scholars are not. It is also not something you apply for: faculty contact their school's dean, who evaluates eligibility and submits requests, and a university committee prioritises tenured and tenure-line faculty because demand exceeds supply. The office separately states that it does not provide short-term or temporary housing.

The provost's apartments for international visitors. NYU's Global Research Initiatives office runs furnished apartments near Washington Square, and this one catches people out because it sounds exactly right. It is for non-NYU-affiliated visiting faculty and professionals only, not visiting students or postdoctoral researchers — postdocs are excluded by name. The hosting NYU unit applies and is responsible for the rental cost; there is no individual application. Stays run from a minimum of one month to less than a full academic year, booked in calendar-month blocks with full monthly rent owed even for a shorter stay, and repeat visitors are limited to three short stays. Viewing an apartment before booking is not possible.

If you hold a faculty post elsewhere and an NYU department is hosting and funding you, ask them about it. Otherwise, move on.

What is open, and to whom

School-level postdoc housing. NYU's postdoctoral affairs office is candid: on-campus housing for postdocs is managed at the individual school level and availability varies. Units are typically studio apartments; some schools offer limited one-bedrooms for postdocs with children staying nine months or more. Because of demand, eligible postdocs may be placed on a waiting list that can extend up to ten months at some schools. This is not the faculty housing office — it is a separate school-level allocation, so the person to ask is your school's administrator, not the faculty housing office.

NYU Langone housing, if Langone employs you. Eligibility is employment-gated: full-time nurses, house staff such as residents and clinical fellows, and postdoctoral research fellows, plus certain students. Postdocs submit credentials for approval before applying and are advised to apply at least four months before their start date; offers typically arrive thirty to forty-five days before arrival, and declining an offer removes you from the waiting list. Buildings are on the East Side near the Kips Bay campus — a different neighbourhood from NYU's Washington Square halls, and one of the buildings shares a name with a Washington Square hall, so read addresses carefully.

The NYU Langone lease guaranty. Worth a separate email even if you do not get an apartment: NYU Langone states that, under certain conditions, NYU may act as a lease guarantor for eligible students, postdocs, residents or fellows renting off campus. A university guarantor solves the single hardest problem an international researcher faces on the private market. It is conditional and population-limited, so ask rather than assume.

The two summer programmes, which are genuinely open. NYU summer housing defines affiliation rather than requiring it — your status decides which buildings and dates you can book, not whether you can book at all. NYU Law's summer living programme states outright that you do not have to be enrolled in an academic programme to apply, and takes couples and families. Ask your host institute whether it holds apartments. Some NYU institutes keep a small number of studios for their own visiting scholars, allocated internally with priority to visiting assistant professors and scholars coming from abroad. It is never advertised and it is explicitly not guaranteed, but the question costs nothing and the generalisable lesson is: ask your host unit directly.

The off-campus housing portal. NYU describes it as the place to search for roommates, subleases and renting information, and says access is available once you have received your NYU credentials. So it is useful after you arrive and useless while you are deciding.

Washington Square and Kips Bay are different commutes

This is the practical half of the guide, and it is the thing that most often goes wrong.

Washington Square sits inside a dense ring of stations. NYU Law's visitor page lists the 6 to Astor Place, the N/R to 8th Street, the A/B/C/D/E/F/M to West 4th Street–Washington Square, and the 1 to Christopher Street, with the Union Square complex about six blocks north. Counting stations within roughly half a mile, that is sixteen routes on a weekday — thirteen at weekends, because the B, M and W do not run then. Very few parts of the city need a transfer to get here.

Kips Bay has no subway at all. NYU Langone is at 550 First Avenue, with Bellevue and the Manhattan VA in the same corridor. The nearest stations are 33rd Street and 28th Street on the Lexington Avenue line, which means walking Park, Lexington, Third, Second and First — long avenue blocks, not short street blocks. The honest answer for a Kips Bay commute is often the bus: the M15 local runs north on First Avenue and south on Second Avenue around the clock, seven days a week, and unlike its Select Bus Service sibling it has no overnight gap. The M34 crosstown links the corridor west to Penn Station and east to the waterfront, and NYC Ferry stops at East 34th Street beside the campus.

So:

• Working at Washington Square? Almost any decent subway address works. Astoria on the N/W, Williamsburg on the L, and anywhere on the 6 or the A/C/E all give you a one-seat ride.
• Working at Langone? Prioritise the East Side or the M15's route. Murray Hill and Gramercy are walkable without a train at all. An Upper East Side address is a straight run down the M15. A beautiful apartment on the west side of Manhattan will mean a crosstown journey twice a day.

A sequence that works

1. Confirm which campus you are actually based at, and get the street address. 2. Ask your school administrator — not the faculty housing office — what postdoc or school-level housing you are eligible for and what the waiting list looks like. 3. If Langone employs you, ask about both the housing waitlist and the lease guaranty, at least four months out. 4. If your visit is a summer one, apply in late winter. 5. Book something short you can walk away from for your first two weeks, and view places in person.
