Washington Square is one of the best-connected places in the city — NYU's own pages list the 6 to Astor Place, the N/R to 8th Street, the A/B/C/D/E/F/M to West 4th Street and the 1 to Christopher Street, with Union Square a few blocks north. The Kips Bay hospital corridor has no subway at all: NYU Langone is at 550 First Avenue and the nearest stations are 33rd and 28th Streets on the Lexington line, three long avenue blocks west. The M15 local bus on First and Second Avenues runs around the clock and is often the honest answer; NYC Ferry stops at East 34th Street beside the campus.

Commuting to NYU / Kips Bay
This hub covers two NYU locations that people constantly mix up. Washington Square is the university campus in Greenwich Village and is one of the best-connected places in the city. NYU Langone is a hospital campus two miles north-east on First Avenue in Kips Bay, alongside Bellevue and the Manhattan VA — and it has no subway of its own. If you are arriving to work at Langone and you book a room "near NYU", you can easily end up with a daily crosstown walk you did not plan for.
The thing people get wrong
Washington Square sits inside a dense ring of stations; the First Avenue hospital corridor has no subway at all, and the nearest trains are on Lexington Avenue, about three long avenue blocks west.
How the transit actually works
- Washington SquareNYU Law's own visitor page lists four approaches: the 6 to Astor Place, the N/R to 8th Street, the A/B/C/D/E/F/M to West 4th Street–Washington Square, and the 1 to Christopher Street. Counting the stations within roughly half a mile — including the 14th Street–Union Square complex about six blocks north — the MTA's station data shows sixteen routes on weekdays, dropping to thirteen at weekends because the B, M and W do not run then. Very few parts of the city need a transfer to get here.
- Kips Bay and the First Avenue hospitalsNYU Langone is at 550 First Avenue, Bellevue at 462 First Avenue, and the Manhattan VA at 423 East 23rd Street. No subway line runs under First Avenue here. The closest stations are 33rd Street and 28th Street on the Lexington Avenue line, which means walking Park, Lexington, Third, Second and First — long avenue blocks, not short street blocks.
- The bus that actually solves itThe M15 runs north on First Avenue and south on Second Avenue and, unlike its Select Bus Service sibling, the local runs around the clock every day of the week. If you are living anywhere on the East Side, the M15 is often the honest answer for a Kips Bay commute. The M34 crosstown links the corridor west to Penn Station and east to the waterfront at Waterside.
- A ferry link people forgetNYC Ferry's Astoria route stops at East 34th Street, on the waterfront beside the Langone campus, and connects to Roosevelt Island and East 90th Street. It is a genuine no-transfer link between clusters that have an awkward subway relationship. Schedules are seasonal — check before you rely on it.
Where people live, and what the connection is
- Greenwich Village & the East Village — Walking distance to Washington Square; expensive, and the reason most people look further out.
- Murray Hill & Gramercy — Walkable to the Kips Bay hospitals without a train at all — the simplest answer if the budget allows.
- Astoria, Queens — One seat on the N/W to 8th Street–NYU near Washington Square, and to Herald Square. Nothing direct to the First Avenue corridor. Note the W does not run at weekends.
- Williamsburg, Brooklyn — One seat on the L to 14th Street, then a walk down to Washington Square. No direct ride to Kips Bay.
- Upper East Side above 59th Street — A straight run down the M15 bus to the hospitals, or the 6 to 33rd Street and the crosstown walk.
- Harlem — One-seat rides on the 6 to Astor Place and on the A/B/C/D to West 4th Street — but which trains you get depends entirely on which 125th Street station you live near.
Nights and weekends
- The 6 and the A run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The C does not run overnight — the A substitutes for it.
- The W does not run at weekends at all, so a Broadway-line address that looks well connected on a Tuesday may not be on a Saturday.
- The M15 local bus on First and Second Avenues runs around the clock; the M15 Select Bus Service version does not.

The MTA's station data records 8th Street–NYU and Astor Place as not step-free, and 28th Street on the Lexington line as only partially accessible. Check station-by-station with the MTA's accessibility tools if that matters to you.

NYU summer housing
NYU's downtown residence halls open to summer residents, including people with no NYU affiliation at all — one of the few institutional beds in Manhattan an outsider can book.
- Who it's for
- Summer residents. NYU defines affiliation rather than requiring it: you are NYU-affiliated if you are taking classes, volunteering, working or participating in a programme at NYU that summer, and "Not Affiliated" otherwise.
- Eligibility
- Affiliation status determines which buildings and which date ranges you can book, not whether you can book. Residents must be 18 or older and must have health insurance valid in New York State or sufficient resources for a medical emergency. An NYU ID number is created as part of the booking process.
- Realistic for a visiting researcher?
- Genuinely open to an unaffiliated summer visitor, which almost nothing else in Manhattan is. The catch is that the non-affiliated product is a single fixed full-summer block rather than a flexible window, and the season sells out.

- The FAQ states that you do not have to be enrolled in an academic programme to apply, and nothing on the page restricts it to law-related visitors. You need an NYU ID and NetID as part of applying, and confirmation of qualifying US health insurance.

- Along with NYU summer housing, one of the only Manhattan institutional beds an unaffiliated summer visitor can actually apply for — and this one takes couples and families, which almost nothing else does.
- Stay length
- Stays run Sunday to Saturday within a roughly ten-week summer programme from late May to early August. Be careful here: NYU Law's own pages state a four-week minimum in one place and a ten-week minimum in another, with shorter stays subject to availability and full-length applicants prioritised. Before you send anyone money in New York
- Confirm the person is allowed to sublet.Ask to see their lease and the landlord’s written consent. “The landlord is fine with it” is not consent, and an unauthorised sublet leaves you with no standing.
- Ask whether the apartment is rent-stabilised, and what the legal rent is. A prime tenant subletting furnished may add no more than a ten per cent increase over the lawful rent for the furniture. A big “furnished academic sublet” premium is the exact pattern that rule exists to stop.
- Never pay by wire transfer, gift card or cryptocurrency, and never under time pressure. Federal and New York State consumer authorities both name those payment demands as a scam signal outright.
- Insist on a live video walkthrough if you cannot visit — a live call where you can ask them to point the camera, not a recorded tour.
- Read the written terms before any money moves, and ask for the pre-occupancy walkthrough New York law entitles you to, with existing damage recorded and signed.
- Treat a below-market offer as the bait, not the bargain.New York’s market is efficient; a cheap furnished room offered to a stranger abroad is unusual enough to deserve suspicion.
- An institutional email address proves nothing about a property. It shows someone controls an account. It says nothing about whether they own, rent or control the apartment.
- Know the under-30-day rule. A whole apartment for a fortnight is not something a host can lawfully offer you in an ordinary residential building — so a listing that offers it is telling you something about the person, not about the price.
