Roommate checklist for visiting researchers

What to sort out before moving in with roommates during a research stay — money, space, schedules, and an easy exit.

Housing · For Researchers joining or forming a shared household · Updated Jun 1, 2026 · Last reviewed Jun 1, 2026

Sharing a house is the fastest, cheapest way to land during a research stay — and the source of most avoidable friction. A short conversation up front prevents almost all of it.

Money

  • Total monthly cost: rent share, utilities, internet, and any household supplies.
  • How and when each person pays, and to whom.
  • Deposit amount, who holds it, and how it's returned when you leave.

The space

  • Which room is yours, what furniture is included, and what storage you get.
  • Shared vs. private bathroom, kitchen, and laundry.
  • Guest and overnight-visitor norms.

Living together

  • Quiet hours and work-from-home schedules (researchers keep odd hours).
  • Cleaning expectations and shared vs. individual groceries.
  • Heating/AC preferences and who controls the thermostat.

The exit

  • The end date and how much notice to give if plans change.
  • What happens if someone leaves early — a real risk on short research stays.

Before you commit

  • Tour in person or by live video and meet the housemates.
  • Get the key terms in writing, even informally. See the no-credit guide if you lack U.S. credit history.
