Selling everything before leaving the U.S.

A timeline for winding down a U.S. household: furniture, car, accounts, and goodbyes.

Moving sales · For International researchers leaving the U.S. · Updated Jun 1, 2026 · Last reviewed Jun 1, 2026

Leaving the country involves more than selling furniture. Work backward from your departure date.

6–8 weeks out

  • List large furniture and your car (cars take longest to sell).
  • Give notice on your lease and confirm your deposit return process.

2–4 weeks out

  • Sell or donate remaining household goods.
  • Plan to keep a bank account open briefly for final charges and refunds.

Final week

  • Close out utilities and forward mail.
  • Keep essentials (bedding, a few kitchen items) for the last nights, then give them away.
