Arrival checklist · NYU / Kips Bay

Settling in near NYU Washington Square & Kips Bay medical corridor

A practical, step-by-step checklist for your first weeks. Not legal, immigration, or tax advice — confirm details with your host institution.

Before you arrive

  • Confirm your start date and badging/ID process with your host (New York University (Washington Square)).
  • Line up short-term housing for your first few weeks so you don't commit to a lease sight-unseen.
  • Arrange a US-usable phone (a prepaid SIM or eSIM works on day one).
  • Shortlist neighborhoods near NYU / Kips Bay: Greenwich Village, East Village, Kips Bay, Murray Hill.

Your first week

  • Pick up your institutional ID/badge and email — your email domain may unlock community access here.
  • Open a bank account and sort out subway fare — check the MTA's own fares page for the current payment options and any weekly cap before you buy anything.
  • Walk or ride your commute once before you rely on it.

Getting around

  • Washington Square is one of the best-connected places in the city — NYU's own pages list the 6 to Astor Place, the N/R to 8th Street, the A/B/C/D/E/F/M to West 4th Street and the 1 to Christopher Street, with Union Square a few blocks north. The Kips Bay hospital corridor has no subway at all: NYU Langone is at 550 First Avenue and the nearest stations are 33rd and 28th Streets on the Lexington line, three long avenue blocks west. The M15 local bus on First and Second Avenues runs around the clock and is often the honest answer; NYC Ferry stops at East 34th Street beside the campus.
  • A used commuter bike from the marketplace pays for itself quickly if you're near a trail or bus line.

Settling in

  • Furnish cheaply from moving sales and the marketplace — researchers leave every season.
  • Join a newcomer happy hour or meetup in your first month.
  • Read the safety guide before paying for any housing or marketplace item.
