What to do during your first week in the DC area as a visiting researcher

A day-by-day first-week checklist for arriving researchers: badge, bank, phone, transit, housing, and finding people.

Arrival & setup · For Researchers in their first days in the DC/Maryland area · Updated Jun 1, 2026 · Last reviewed Jun 1, 2026

The first week sets the tone. Here's a simple sequence so nothing important slips.

Days 1–2: get operational

  • Pick up your institutional ID/badge and email — your email domain often unlocks community access here.
  • Get a U.S. phone number (a prepaid plan or eSIM needs no credit check).
  • Buy a SmarTrip card for Metro and buses.

Days 2–3: money and basics

  • Open a bank account (passport, a second ID, your U.S. address, sometimes proof of appointment).
  • Stock up on essentials; locate the nearest grocery and pharmacy.

Days 3–5: nail your commute and housing

  • Ride your commute once at your real start time before you rely on it.
  • If you're in temporary housing, tour longer-term options now — sublets and shared houses near the Red Line.

Days 5–7: find your people

  • Browse community events and put one on the calendar.
  • Say yes to lab and hallway invitations; furnish cheaply from the marketplace.
