Read the shuttle as a service for official visitors and staff, which is how NIST frames it, rather than as public transit you can turn up and use. The genuinely public option is Montgomery County Ride On route 54, which stops at Building 101, and NIST also provides free covered bike parking and notes that bikes are allowed on Ride On buses and most Metrorail cars. That makes Gaithersburg, Rockville, King Farm and the upper Red Line workable without a car, though the shuttle is weekday-only and ends in the early evening, so late lab hours still favour driving. NIST's transit page was last updated in October 2024 — check it for current times rather than trusting a schedule quoted anywhere, including here.
